St. James NEST’s fourth speaker series focuses on the theme: Stay Safe. Stay Strong. Stay Smart! As residents of St. James, we strive to age successfully in our homes. St. James NEST provides both educational and support services to make that a reality. Please join us for this educational series aimed at offering solutions, discussions and tools for aging in place. This series is open to all St. James community residents!

 

The Four P’s: A Program for Personal and Property Protection

Come for a fun, exciting, and energetic presentation by Nancy Adelis, a Safety and Crime Prevention Instructor. This presentation will touch on personal security, potential limitations of seniors, and the most useful tactics to protect yourself and your property. Nancy is a long time St. James resident with a wealth of knowledge in protection strategies for seniors. From this non-firearm, non-martial arts presentation you will:

  •     Learn about Brunswick County Crime Statistics such as property theft, sexual offenders, and age-related statistics
  •     Understand what to expect from a criminal in mindset and behavior
  •     Understand why St James would be a target
  •     Gather quick tips on how to stay safe during travel
  •     Know how to use assistive devices as protection tools

For any senior living in St. James, security is of vital importance. Learning additional tips on how you can be at your best through enhanced safety practices is key to a sense of security at home. Please join us for this timely educational session.

Cyber security is an important aspect of staying safe in both our private and professional lives. One wrong click on your computer or phone can lead to chaos! Learn how to spot internet crime and scams aimed specifically at obtaining your information. This discussion will focus on improving technology awareness, facilitating prevention conversations, and providing strategies to proactively (before you click) identify and protect yourselves from scams and internet trickery!

To Fall or Not to Fall

How often do you stumble when walking, going up steps or trip over a rug? One key to physical health and the ability to age safely in our home is avoiding falls. Come learn about how and why we fall, bio-density strengthening, and several prevention tips on fall avoidance and hazard identification. This is a must-attend session for learning about trips and falls both forward and backward. From this presentation you will:

Strength is Ageless

You are never too old and it is never too late to experience the benefits of weight and resistance training! Strength is considered the new “vital sign” in senior health. It is as important as blood pressure, pulse, etc. This presentation will change the perceptions of what you think you can do and redefine the aging process. Come learn how to develop healthy habits aimed at improving your strength, both physically and mentally.

From this presentation you will:

  •        Learn how to become strong, powerful in mind, body and beliefs
  •        Understand aging and super aging
  •        Expand your belief in what you can do and accomplish
  •        Define attainable goals
  •        Focus on the process of improving strength

This session will demonstrate the health benefits of weight and resistance training on a regular basis to safely and successfully age in your home. This is for any level of physical ability and assists you in forming healthy and consistent strengthening habits!

 

Navigating the US Healthcare System

The complexities of the US healthcare system combined with an increase in personal healthcare needs may leave you feeling frustrated, confused and ultimately, stressed. What do I need? Where do I go? What is covered? Understanding healthcare in the US and the resources available to you is vital to the care you receive. When you lack knowledge, it becomes difficult to be your own best advocate. This session will provide you with a map of the US healthcare maze and guidance from a healthcare navigator on how to work in, around, and through any medical issues, questions and/or services.

  •       Understand that medical issues in seniors are complex
  •       Eliminate or lessen confusion, anger, and anxiety by knowing how to navigate healthcare
  •       Identify the available experienced support and where to obtain it

Quality and expeditious healthcare is an important pillar to aging safely in our homes. Knowing who to call, what to ask and how to find solutions to our medical issues makes a huge difference in the healthcare experience. Knowledgeable nurse navigators are available in St. James.
